Description:
By Special Ligislation the president was authorized to establish a customs house in Key West in 1822. In 1833 the government purchased land bounded on the Whitehead St. Front St. Greene St and on the west by waters of the harbor. A frame buiding was used as a Customs House until 1876, In 1888 the red brick Customs House was built as we know it today. In 1885 the Board of Trade was organized and in 1889 the Merchants Protective Assoc. was formed to protect Key West merchants from Jew peddlers who start visiting Key West. In 1902 the Chamber of Commerce was organized.In the late 1800's Key West material development included a telegraphic line, a gas company, a street railway, a pleasure pavilion, an electric company, ice plants, express companies, a sponge industry, building & loan assocn. canning factory for green turtle, and cigar box factory industry.

Attractions & Activities: the oldest attraction on the island is the Key West Aquarium, built between 1933 and first opened in Feb 1935. Other attractions include the Key West Butterfly Conservatory, The Curry Mansion Inn & Museum, the Key West Shipwreck trasures museum, The Mel Fisher Treasuer Museum, the Pirate Soul Museum, Old Town Trolley Tours, Conch Tour Train, the Yankee Freedom catamaran to visit the Dry Tortugas & historic Fort Jefferson, plus a multitude of fine restaurant, bars and adult entertainment locations.
